Get Real with God
“But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature… for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.”— 1 Samuel 16:7 (kjv)
Have you ever noticed how we sometimes “change our voice” when we pray? We start talking to God in a way we don’t normally talk to anyone else. We try to sound more spiritual, more put together, more “right.”
Here’s the truth: God isn’t impressed with polished words— He’s looking at your heart. And the thing is… He already knows you anyway.
He knows what you’re thinking before you say it. He knows what you’re struggling with before you admit it. He knows the questions you’re afraid to even pray out loud.
So really, what are we trying to hide?
David didn’t hide. In the Psalms, he’s completely honest—sometimes praising, sometimes crying, sometimes confused, sometimes repenting. He just talks to God like God is really there… because He is.
And God never turned him away for being real.
Jesus also reminds us that prayer isn’t about being seen or sounding impressive: “But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet… and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.” — Matthew 6:6
God isn’t moved by performance. He’s moved by honesty. So maybe prayer doesn’t need to sound better. Maybe it just needs to be real. You don’t have to clean yourself up before you come to Him. You don’t have to find the perfect words. Just come as you are—tired, thankful, confused, hurting, or hopeful. Because He already knows the real you… and He still wants you close. That’s the beauty of it. You don’t have to perform for the One who made you. You just have to come.
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.” — Psalm 34:18
God isn’t looking for perfect prayers. He’s near to honest hearts.
Today’s Challenge:
Take a few quiet minutes today and just talk to God like you would someone who truly loves you- because He does. No pressure. No performance.Just be honest—about your thoughts, your struggles, your gratitude, your questions. He already knows you… and He still wants to hear from you.
Prayer:
Father, Thank You that I don’t have to pretend with You. You already know me completely, and yet You still welcome me. Help me stop trying to sound spiritual and start being honest with You. Teach me to pray from my heart. Thank You for loving the real me and never turning me away. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
